Co-parenting after divorce or separation

How to stay involved in your child's life while living apart: a clear schedule, written agreements, transparent expenses.

What co-parenting is

Co-parenting is the practice where, after divorce or separation, both parents keep taking part in the child's life together: they agree on the schedule, visits, school, medical care and expenses, make joint decisions and honor their agreements. The child keeps close relationships with both parents, and the parents' conflicts don't spill over onto them.

The key goal of co-parenting is not to “win” time with the child but to make it predictable and calm: a clear routine for the child and fewer reasons for disputes for the parents.

Principles that help

  • the child takes no part in the parents' conflict and doesn't pass messages between them;
  • the child's schedule is predictable and equally clear to both parents;
  • agreements are recorded in writing, not “on words”;
  • changes are discussed in advance and confirmed by both sides;
  • child-related expenses are transparent: who paid what and in what share;
  • the history of agreements is preserved — you can always return to it.

What to record when living apart

In practice, parents find it convenient to keep shared records of staying days, visits and handovers, events (school, clubs, doctors), change proposals and their statuses, discussions next to an event, and child-related expenses. This way, “what we agreed” stops being a matter of dispute: you can simply look it up.

How SGL supports co-parenting

SGL is a shared calendar and agreement space for parents who live apart. The service helps organize co-parenting after divorce or separation: agree on the child's schedule, visits, events and expenses, keep the history of agreements and, if needed, export it to a document. The service doesn't replace court decisions, notarized agreements or legal advice. It is being prepared for launch on iOS, Android and the web — request early access.

You can ask questions about the service at hello@getsgl.com.
